A Buyer's Guide to Buying an AKKPS Registered KuneKune

  • JOIN AKKPS prior to purchasing a pig.  This will gain you access to the STEP PLAN / BUYERS REGISTRATION COMPLAINT PROGRAM should you need to utilize the program.
  • Verify that the Breeder or Seller is a current AKKPS MEMBER.
  • Get the AKKPS number of the pig you are purchasing.
  • Get a CONTRACT stating that the pig is being sold AKKPS registered and contains all pertinent information about the pig.

PURCHASING A PIG THAT IS NOT FULLY REGISTERED

  • Check the AKKPS HERD BOOK to verify that a Litter Notification has been recorded for the pig you are purchasing.  A “P” will appear after the AKKPS number indicating the pig has been litter notified.  A litter notification does NOT mean that the pig is fully registered, it means that the pig has been litter notified by the breeder.
  • Verify that Breeder of the pig in the AKKPS HERD BOOK is the person that you are purchasing the pig from and that they are not brokering a pig for someone else.  Should the owner not be the breeder, get a contract for the owner.  AKKPS can not utilize the STEP PLAN / BUYERS REGISTRATION COMPLAINT PROGRAM unless there is a contract or written documentation from the breeder of the pig.
  • Confirm with the Breeder that the Breeder will complete ALL REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS.

PURCHASING A PIG THAT IS FULLY REGISTERED

  • Check the AKKPS HERD BOOK to verify that the pig is fully registered with AKKPS.  A fully registered pig will have NO initial behind the number.  A Companion Animal / Pet will have an “A” after the AKKPS number.  A Meat Pig will have a “MP” after the AKKPS number.
  • Verify that Owner of the pig using the AKKPS HERD BOOK is the person you are purchasing the pig from and that they are not brokering a pig for someone else.  Should the owner not be the seller, get a contract for the owner.  AKKPS can not utilize the STEP PLAN / BUYERS REGISTRATION COMPLAINT PROGRAM unless there is a contract or written documentation from the owner in the AKKPS Herd Book.
  • Decide with the Seller, who is submitting the TRANSFER REGISTRATION and have this included in the contract.
  • If the pig you are purchasing is a bred sow, verify using the AKKPS HERD BOOK that the sire(s) are AKKPS registered and have all of their information included on the contract.
