This is a question we get fairly often, so let’s talk about it in an easy, straightforward way. Are rosettes on Kunekune piglets a medical issue? The simple answer is no. Rosettes are not a health problem at all.

 

WHAT ARE ROSETTES?

Rosettes are just hair patterns. Think of them like cowlicks in human hair. They are small swirls where the hair grows in a different direction. They are part of how the pig looks and have nothing to do with how healthy that pig is.

 

ROSETTES FROM A MEDICAL PERSPECTIVE

From a medical and husbandry standpoint, rosettes do not cause pain. They do not affect growth. They do not impact fertility. They do not shorten lifespan. A piglet with rosettes is just as healthy as one without them.

 

WHY DO COME PIGS HAVE ROSETTES?

Some piglets have rosettes because of genetics. Some pigs are more likely to produce them, while others rarely do. They can also be more noticeable on lighter colored pigs, shorter coats, or fast growing piglets. All of this is completely normal within the breed.

 

ARE ROSETTES A SKIN PROBLEM?

Sometimes rosettes get confused with skin problems. Real skin issues usually come with redness, hair loss, scabbing, thickened skin, or itching. Rosettes do none of those things. They are simply a natural hair growth pattern.

 

There is also some misinformation suggesting that rosettes mean bad genetics or future health issues. There is no scientific evidence to support that idea. Many excellent, well established Kunekune bloodlines produce pigs with rosettes.

 

The only time to look closer is if an area that looks like a rosette also has hair loss, redness, crusting, or itching. That points to a skin condition, not a rosette.

 

The bottom line is simple. Rosettes on Kunekune piglets are purely cosmetic. They do not mean something is wrong. They do not predict future problems. They are just part of what makes each pig unique.
